Recap: Reiten, Shaw Fire Visiting Gotham FC Past Racing Louisville

Guro Reiten scored her first career NWSL goal and Jaedyn Shaw slotted home her fourth game-winning goal of the season to push Gotham FC to a 2-1 win at Racing Louisville on a muggy Friday night in Kentucky.

The win completed Gotham FC’s season sweep of Racing, pushing the visitors five points clear of second-place Washington in the heating-up NWSL Shield race.

“It was a game that we are very proud of the outcome because it was really a team performance,” said Gotham FC coach Juan Carlos Amorós. “We needed everyone. We spoke about it before: Louisville presents a battle – (they’re) very direct – and we needed to make sure we work hard on those situations. But we needed to also be good on the ball, pay attention to the details with the set pieces, be more offensive getting more people in the box. … Having the group so connected and able to close the game – and how we closed it – said a lot from the group of players.”

Gotham FC (14-4-6, 48 points) continued its form as one of the top road teams in the league, claiming its seventh win away from home this campaign. It was the third time this year Amorós’s team followed a loss with a victory, and this iteration felt similar to Gotham FC fans.

Gotham FC started both halves fast, scoring in the eighth and 46th minutes, and asserted its usual control of a second-half lead from there. Racing had two lengthy spells in the second half without a shot, including a 24-minute dry spell to finish the game while Gotham FC held 70.2% of possession over the final 45 minutes.

Reiten’s finish served as the highlight of the match, curling in a 23-yard left-footed drive to score her first NWSL goal just seven minutes and 45 seconds in. It was an expertly taken shot from the 32-year-old, who became the first Norwegian to score in the NWSL.

Racing equalized nine minutes later through Kayla Fischer. The Louisville forward pounced on a carom off the post to nod in her seventh goal of the year.

Shaw’s magic moment came just after the second-half start, the culmination of an electric move that covered 90 yards and involved five Gotham FC players.

Defender Jess Carter unleashed Jordynn Dudley down the right flank with a 50-yard long ball into space. Dudley’s pass led midfielder Rose Lavelle, who returned to action after missing the past two games through injury, into the middle, some 25 yards from goal. Lavelle played in Sam Kerr on the right, and Kerr squared a pass through the box to Shaw, who passed her team-leading seventh goal into the low right corner.

Back in the win column, Gotham FC concludes its three-match road trip next Saturday with a high-stakes tilt against the third-place North Carolina Courage at First Horizon Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET, with the match airing on ION.
