Gotham FC Claims NWSL Shield with Win in Regular Season Finale

It only took eight minutes and 40 seconds for Gotham FC to make a clear statement of intent in the race to claim the NWSL Shield.

Entering Sunday’s regular season finale with the inside track to winning the trophy given to the league’s regular season champion, Gotham FC immediately put the visiting Utah Royals on the back foot, with Guro Reiten scoring the game-winner in the ninth minute and Jaedyn Shaw adding a second-half insurance goal in a confident 2-0 win at Sports Illustrated Stadium.

Gotham FC secured its fifth major trophy in three years and the No. 1 seed in the 2026 NWSL Playoffs, presented by Google Pixel, ensuring home-field advantage in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of the postseason. It will host eighth-seeded Seattle Reign FC for the quarterfinal at 12:30 p.m. ET Sunday at Sports Illustrated Stadium, with ABC carrying the national broadcast.

“It's definitely a historic day for the club,” said Gotham FC coach Juan Carlos Amorós. “At least for a week, we are champions of the NWSL Championship, champions of the NWSL Challenge Cup, and now we are champions of the NWSL Shield, which means that basically we're winners of everything, and we're going to try to win the championship again. One thing that really fills us with pride is that we set up a target at the beginning of the year to be consistent, to be always ready to win, to play our way, and against everything and against everyone, we were able to do that.”

Gotham FC (18-5-7, 61 points) set club records in wins, points and shutouts this season, clinching the highest postseason seed in club history in the process. The club’s previous two NWSL Championships – 2023 and 2025 – were won as the lowest seed in the postseason bracket.

On Sunday, Amorós’s squad had a number of paths to the top seed, but the hosts took the clearest route with a dominant performance to finish off the most successful home campaign in club history. Gotham FC tripled Utah’s expected goals (1.5-0.5) and touches in the opposition box (29-10), producing three big chances to Utah’s zero and controlling 55% of possession.

For her first Gotham FC goal, Reiten got loose on the back post to batter in a low cross from Midge Purce that took a deflection into the Norwegian’s path. The timing couldn’t have been better: Gotham FC’s only challenger for the NWSL Shield – San Diego – scored its go-ahead goal moments before Reiten’s finish sent the 11,209 fans on hand into a frenzy.

A welcome sight in the second half, Shaw returned to the field after missing the previous two matches because of a knee injury. Fellow star midfielder Rose Lavelle also returned to action after missing last week’s match through a neck injury.

Twenty minutes after coming on, Shaw redirected a whipped-in cross from Purce just inside the back post for her team-leading 11th goal of the season. The 21-year-old Shaw has 16 NWSL goal contributions this year, and the final one of the campaign turned the match at Sports Illustrated Stadium into a party and a coronation.
