Gotham FC One Step Closer to NWSL Shield with Win at Orlando

Gotham FC took a major step toward clinching the NWSL Shield, securing a vital 2-1 win at Orlando on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Inter.co Stadium in central Florida.

Midge Purce and Tierna Davidson scored and goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger made seven critical saves to propel Gotham FC four points clear of second-place San Diego and six ahead of third-place Washington before Gotham FC’s Shield rivals kicked off their Sunday evening matches.

Seeking its first NWSL Shield, given to the league’s regular season champion, Gotham FC (17-5-7, 58 points) has not lost in 13 games this season when leading at halftime. A San Diego loss and a Washington loss or draw would clinch Gotham FC’s second trophy this year and fifth since 2023.

“I think what's contributed to this is just kind of the togetherness – everyone's kind of backs against the wall,” said Gotham FC lead assistant coach Shaun Harris. “This is it. This is the job that needs to get done. Everyone's taking real responsibility and accountability, from staff and management all the way through to the playing group. The players are meeting and making sure that everyone's on board, everyone's on the same page and going out there and giving 100%. You saw that today, the fight and the willingness to attack the opposition box and defend our box. I think it was commendable, really good credit to the whole team in setting out what they wanted to do. Sometimes you’ve got to grind it out and fight, and the team showed real character today, so we're really proud of them.”

Albeit in a longer regular season, Gotham FC tied the club record for wins (17) and set a new high with its 58 points for the campaign. It was Gotham FC’s third consecutive win at Orlando, including last November’s 1-0 victory in the NWSL semifinals.

To get there, Gotham FC needed some magic from its most accomplished veterans.

Berger stood tall for the visitors, adding two clearances and even a won tackle to her stat line. The German No. 1 keeper smothered Kerry Abello’s one-on-one opportunity in the 26th minute, parried a surprise free kick from Marta in first half stoppage time and even swiped the ball from Marta’s feet after the Brazilian star dribbled through multiple defenders.

Purce and Davidson took it from there. After two early Orlando chances, Purce’s professionally-taken looping header beat Orlando goalkeeper Cosette Morché from 10 yards out, netting the 31-year-old’s 21st career goal with Gotham FC. The goal sealed Reiten’s place in the club record books, giving her six assists to tie the Gotham FC high in that single-season category.

After Morché’s fingertip save pushed Reiten’s 61st-minute header off the crossbar for a corner, Jaelin Howell rattled the bar with an almost identical header to Purce’s goal on the ensuing set piece. The rebound bounced to Davidson, who smashed in her third goal of the season that eventually stood as the game-winner.

Orlando’s Solai Washington scored three minutes later, but Gotham FC held together defensively to remain in the driver’s seat for the top seed in the NWSL Playoffs.

Gotham FC now returns home to prepare for its final match of the 2026 NWSL regular season, taking on Utah Royals FC at Sports Illustrated Stadium on NWSL Decision Day, the final matchday of the regular season when all 16 teams play simultaneously. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. ET, with broadcast coverage to be announced later this evening.
