Recap: Dudley’s Late Goal Gives Gotham FC 2-1 Win at North Carolina

Jordynn Dudley scored both Gotham FC goals in a riveting 2-1 win at North Carolina on Saturday night, netting the game-winner one minute into stoppage time in a match that felt like a playoff game in front of a charged-up sellout crowd at First Horizon Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park.

It was the second consecutive game Gotham FC rallied to win after relinquishing a 1-0 lead, and the three points gave the visitors the league’s best away record, with their eight road win of the season.

“It's a massive win for us,” said Gotham FC coach Juan Carlos Amorós. “It's one that really represents the character and the personality and the winning mentality of this team. It’s probably not the best football performance – that's for sure – but at the same time, to be a champion, you need to win these kind of games where it's exchanging punches and you're away from home and playing against a very good team. … The players, again, they never give up and they put pressure to win the game in the 92nd minute. So, incredibly proud of them because if you want to be a champion, you need to win these games, and today they really showed that.”

Gotham FC (15-4-6, 51 points) extended its lead atop the NWSL standings with the win, moving six points clear of second-place San Diego with five games to go. Third-place Washington could move back within five points of Gotham FC with a win on Sunday.

With one of the largest crowds in North Carolina Courage history on hand, Saturday’s match lived up to the hype, a physical, intense affair marked by major momentum swings throughout the 90-plus minutes.

Dudley’s sterling talent produced the difference-making highlights.

The 21-year-old rookie scored her first regular season goal since May 31 by carving through North Carolina’s defense and slotting home a low right-footed finish in the eighth minute. The layoff assist from Sam Kerr was the star Australian's third of the year.

North Carolina thought it had evened the game through Ashley Sanchez right at the start of the second half, but a VAR review determined Gianna Paul, who assisted Sanchez’s would-be goal, was offside in the start of the build-up to the play.

The Courage got its goal in the 69th minute instead, with defender Natalia Staude smacking in a rebound off a corner from close range.

That set up Dudley’s late heroics. It was Kerr again who initiated proceedings, popping up a header on a recycled corner to the back post, where Rose Lavelle’s hustle kept the play alive. Lavelle’s header across the face of the goal found Dudley, who bodied in her fourth goal of the year for the game-winner.

Now Gotham FC returns home to New Jersey in winning form, aiming to begin a two-match homestand with what would be the club’s third consecutive win. Kickoff with the Chicago Stars is set for 8 p.m. ET Friday, with coverage on Prime Video.
