Gotham FC’s Unbeaten Streak Ends in Denver Loss

Gotham FC saw its club-record 10-match regular season unbeaten streak come to an end Sunday afternoon, falling 3-0 to Denver Summit FC at Centennial Stadium in Centennial, Colorado.

After a scoreless opening half, Denver scored three times in the final 45 minutes, with Yuzuki Yamamoto opening the scoring in the 50th minute before Olivia Thomas and Yazmeen Ryan added goals late in the match.

“[It’s] disappointing,” said Gotham FC coach Juan Carlos Amorós. “We need to look at ourselves and make sure that we go against Louisville and get three points. We know how this league is. It's a very competitive one. It's very difficult to do what this team is doing in terms of an unbeaten run and winning every game. But losing a game can happen. It happens to all teams. It's not only about how you lose the game, it's how you recover after that. That's where we need to go to the next game and really show that personality and that football that we know we have in us and that we need to be better.”

The loss moved Gotham FC to 13-4-6 (45 points) on the season, marking the club’s first regular season defeat since July 4 against San Diego. Despite the result, Gotham FC will remain atop the NWSL standings regardless of other results this weekend. The match also featured Gotham FC debuts for midfielders Tess Boade and Meredith Speck, who both entered as second-half substitutes.

The two sides traded opportunities throughout a tightly contested opening half, highlighted by Ann-Katrin Berger’s quick reaction save on Melissa Kössler’s close-range effort in the 12th minute.

Gotham produced its best opportunity of the opening half in the 44th minute. Jaedyn Shaw played a low pass out wide to Guro Reiten, who delivered a cross into the box. After Sam Kerr challenged for the initial header, the ball fell to Jordynn Dudley, whose low strike was saved by Denver goalkeeper Kat Asman.

Denver broke the deadlock five minutes into the second half. Ayo Oke received the ball out wide and sent a cross into the penalty area, where Yamamoto connected and finished past Berger to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage.

Denver doubled its advantage in the 82nd minute through Thomas. After receiving the ball just inside Gotham’s half, Thomas carried it into the penalty area before sending a shot across Berger and inside the far post.

The hosts added a third six minutes later. Ryan started the sequence with a pass to Tash Flint before receiving the ball back near the top of the penalty area, driving centrally and finishing past Berger to make it 3-0.

Now Gotham FC continues its three-match road swing Friday, Sept. 11, against Racing Louisville FC at Lynn Family Stadium. The match kicks off at 6:30 p.m. ET and will stream on NWSL+.
