Gotham FC Extends Lead Atop NWSL Table with Draw at Angel City

LOS ANGELES – Gotham FC hit the crossbar and had a penalty shot saved in the final minutes of an entertaining 0-0 draw at Angel City late Sunday, extending its unbeaten run to nine matches.

The draw helped first-place Gotham FC (13-3-5, 44 points) move seven points clear of Portland and Washington, which are level on 37 points and tied for second place in the NWSL standings.

“I thought the second half was a lot better,” said acting Gotham FC head coach Shaun Harris. “We definitely created a few more chances and (were) unfortunate not to put one away with regards to the (penalty). … It is what it is, and we trust all our players when they step up and take the penalty, and unfortunately it wasn't our day.”

Gotham FC has never lost at BMO Stadium against Angel City and claimed its 13th shutout in 21 matches this season, with Ann-Katrin Berger becoming the first goalkeeper in NWSL history to produce 10 or more clean sheets in back-to-back seasons.

On a sunny Sunday evening in Southern California, the clean sheet didn’t come easily for either team, though Gotham FC will leave feeling the hardest luck.

Guro Reiten’s first penalty attempt in the NWSL since joining Gotham FC from Chelsea in mid-March was parried by Angel City goalkeeper Angelina Anderson, who dived to her low right to get a palm on Reiten’s effort in the 87th minute.

Three minutes later, Australian striker Sam Kerr tried a right-footed long-range drive from 20 yards out only to be denied by the crossbar.

Those two chances stood as Gotham’s best opportunities to break through, though Kerr narrowly missed a pair of chances in the opening 20 minutes and Jaedyn Shaw fizzed a right-footed long range shot just past the post in the 44th minute.

Jordynn Dudley, who once again proved a handful for opposing defenders, forced a sprawling save from Anderson in the 72nd minute and later won the penalty.

Defensively, Gotham called on Berger three times, with the star German required to make a difficult block on a swerving shot from Angel City defender Evelyn Shores late in the first half.

Gotham FC now returns home to host its annual Pride Match against Portland Thorns at Sports Illustrated Stadium on Friday in a major matchup with playoff implications. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET, with coverage on Prime Video.
