Top-Seeded Gotham FC Opens NWSL Title Defense Against Seattle Reign FC

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (Nov. 7, 2026) – Gotham FC begins its pursuit of a second consecutive NWSL Championship on Sunday, hosting Seattle Reign FC in the quarterfinals of the 2026 NWSL Playoffs, presented by Google Pixel, at Sports Illustrated Stadium.

Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m. ET, with ABC and ESPN Deportes carrying the national broadcast. The match will also stream on the ESPN App for unlimited subscribers.

Gotham FC (18-5-7, 61 points) enters the postseason as the No. 1 seed after capturing its first NWSL Shield and setting a club record for points in a regular season. The reigning champions closed out the campaign with a 2-0 victory over Utah Royals FC on Decision Day, securing home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. After winning the 2025 NWSL Championship as the eighth seed, Gotham FC now aims to defend its title from the top of the playoff bracket and claim a third league championship in four seasons.

Seattle Reign FC enters the postseason as the No. 8 seed after securing its playoff berth with a 1-0 victory over the Orlando Pride in its regular season finale. Led by coach Laura Harvey, the Reign will try to reverse their fortunes against Gotham FC after dropping both meetings between the clubs during the 2026 regular season.

Gotham FC swept the season series against Seattle, beginning with a 2-0 victory at Lumen Field on May 15. Jaedyn Shaw opened the scoring in the 24th minute before club captain Tierna Davidson doubled the advantage in the 57th with her first regular season NWSL goal in 2,459 days.

The second meeting produced one of the most dramatic comebacks in Gotham FC history. Trailing 2-0 at halftime following a two-and-a-half-hour weather delay at Icahn Stadium on July 18, Gotham FC rallied behind two late goals from Esther González and a stoppage-time winner from Rose Lavelle to secure a 3-2 victory. González struck in the 81st minute and again in the fourth minute of stoppage time before Lavelle completed the comeback three minutes later. It marked Gotham FC's first regular season victory after trailing by two goals at halftime since 2017, also against Seattle.

Sunday's quarterfinal marks the first postseason meeting between the clubs since the 2023 NWSL Championship, when Gotham FC defeated Seattle 2-1 in San Diego to capture its first league title. Gotham FC enters the matchup with a 12-12-10 all-time record against the Reign across all competitions.

The winner of Sunday's quarterfinal will advance to the NWSL semifinals, moving one step closer to the 2026 NWSL Championship.
