Gotham FC Signs Katie Stengel on Loan from Liverpool

HARRISON, NJ(July 5, 2023) –Gotham FC today announced the signing of forward Katie Stengel on loan from Liverpool Football Club through Sept. 3.



Stengel returns to the National Women’s Soccer League after joining Liverpool in January 2022 to play for her previous Boston Breakers head coach Matt Beard. Last season, she scored nine goals in 15 matches enroute to leading the club to the FA Women’s Championship and earning promotion into the Women’s Super League before contributing 10 goals in 26 appearances across all competitions in 2023.



“I’m looking forward to the opportunity to join Gotham FC and help to make an impact for this club,” said Stengel. “The NWSL has always had a special place in my heart, and I feel fortunate to spend some time back in U.S. in a competitive environment.”



In all NWSL competitions, the forward has appeared in 96 games, with 51 starts, 12 goals, four-game-winners and five assists.



“We are excited to welcome Katie to join our strong core of attacking players,” said General Manager and Head of Soccer Operations Yael Averbuch West. “She brings prior experiences from both inside and outside of the NWSL, and she will be a great complement to our style of play.”



Stengel debuted with the Washington Spirit in 2016, and she went on to earn 10 starts in her 19 games, score four goals, notch one assist, and make appearances in both postseason games on the way to the league final. The following season, Stengel played for both Washington and the Boston Breakers before joining the Utah Royals FC in 2018.



With the Royals over two seasons, Stengel scored eight goals, including all four game winners in her 10 starts and 23 games in 2018 before she featured in 24 games with 16 starts in 2019.



She went on to join the Houston Dashin 2020, providing an assist during the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup to help lead the dash to a tournament win. During the 2020 Fall Series, she played in four games and dished out an assist, and Stengel remained with the club through 2021 before signing with Liverpool.



Stengal is immediately available, pending receipt of International Transfer Certification (ITC), for roster selection for this weekend's Gotham FC vs. Portland Thorns match on Sunday, July 9 .
